Jessica Pegula Reflects on Career Milestones Ahead of Wuhan Open Return
American tennis player Jessica Pegula prepares to return to WTA Tour action at the Wuhan Open after taking a lengthy break following her time at the US Open.
Return to Action at the Wuhan Open
Pegula has not played a competitive match since her US Open semifinal defeat to Aryna Sabalenka in New York. Following that run, the American withdrew from the China Open to take a prolonged rest. She enters the Wuhan Open as the second seed, receiving a bye into the second round where she will face the winner of the opening match between Daria Kasatkina and Jelena Ostapenko.
Speaking to the media ahead of her opening match, Pegula explained her scheduling choice for the WTA 1000 tournament. I wanted to come to Wuhan because I’ve had good results here before,
Pegula said, referencing her run to the final last year against Coco Gauff. It’s important to try and play matches before WTA Finals. Competing in another WTA 1000 is always a good time to win the tournament. For me, I didn’t necessarily want to skip Beijing so coming back to Wuhan was something I always planned to do.

Reflecting on Career Milestones
The 32-year-old currently holds the world number three ranking and stands as the highest-ranked American across both women’s and men’s tennis. With 11 WTA titles to her name—including two secured in the 2026 season at Charleston and Dubai—Pegula reflected on the milestones that shaped her career. There’s probably a few. Making finals of a Grand Slam is always the most exciting. It was just really pivotal, and on paper, the coolest thing I’ve done,
Pegula stated. Cracking the top 10 in the world was a big moment for me. I didn’t think it would necessarily be possible. That was such a big year for me to break into the top 10.
Pegula reached her sole Grand Slam singles final at the 2024 US Open, falling to Sabalenka, and also contested the championship match at the 2023 WTA Finals against Iga Swiatek.
WTA Finals Qualification Context
The year-end WTA Finals are scheduled to take place at Indian Wells next month, featuring an eight-player field. While Pegula has not yet officially mathematically secured her qualification, she occupies third place in the current rankings. World number one Elena Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka, Mirra Andreeva, and Linda Noskova have already secured their respective places in the tournament.
