Aryna Sabalenka Headlines 2026 Wuhan Open WTA 1000 Field

October 8, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

The 2026 Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open returns to the Optics Valley International Tennis Centre from October 12 to October 18, featuring a 56-player singles draw and a total prize pool of $4,088,211. Three-time champion Aryna Sabalenka headlines the field as the only former winner competing in this year’s WTA 1000 event.

Main Draw Begins October 12 with $665,000 Top Prize

Main-draw play begins on Monday, October 12, following the singles draw ceremony scheduled for October 10 at 4:00 p.m. local time. The tournament concludes on Sunday, October 18, with the doubles final starting at 4:00 p.m. and the singles final to follow no earlier than 6:30 p.m. China Standard Time.

The event offers 1000 ranking points for the champion. Prize money distribution is tiered by round, with the singles champion earning $665,000. First-round participants receive $18,300, while the singles finalist is set to collect $385,001. For the doubles draw, the winning team secures $195,000, with the finalists earning $110,010.

Rybakina and Gauff Withdraw While Pegula Returns

World No. 1 Elena Rybakina is absent due to a foot injury, while other high-profile players including Coco Gauff, Naomi Osaka, and Emma Navarro have withdrawn citing fatigue or scheduling changes. Madison Keys and Karolina Pliskova are also out due to abdominal and back injuries, respectively.

Despite these absences, the field includes Jessica Pegula, who returns to the WTA Tour for the first time since the US Open. Other top seeds expected to participate include Mirra Andreeva, Linda Noskova, Elina Svitolina, Karolina Muchova, Iga Swiatek, and Marta Kostyuk. These players, alongside Sabalenka and Pegula, receive a bye into the second round.

Coco Gauff Won Last Year at Wuhan Open

Last year’s tournament saw Coco Gauff secure the title without dropping a set, defeating Jessica Pegula in the final. Gauff’s 2025 campaign at the Optics Valley International Tennis Centre was notably efficient, requiring only 1 hour and 42 minutes to close out the championship match. In the doubles category, Katerina Siniakova and Storm Hunter claimed the 2025 title, defeating Aleksandra Krunic and Anna Danilina.

The scale of the 56-player singles field places the Wuhan Open in a select group of WTA 1000 events, matching the draw sizes of tournaments in Doha and Dubai.

Tournament Results Will Shift Final WTA Rankings

The ranking points at stake are calculated based on a player’s performance relative to the points earned during the same week in the previous season.

The tournament concludes on October 18, setting the stage for the final shifts in the WTA rankings before the close of the 2026 season.
