Jerrod Calhoun to Syracuse? Utah State Coach & NCAA News

Jerrod Calhoun, head coach of the Utah State Aggies men’s basketball team, has been linked to the open head coaching position at Syracuse University, according to reports surfacing Saturday. Calhoun, who led Utah State to a Mountain West Conference regular season and tournament championship in 2026, is entering his second season with the Aggies after being named the 22nd head coach in program history. Calhoun’s success at Utah State follows a six-year tenure at Youngstown State University, where he coached from 2017 to 2024. Prior to Youngstown State, Calhoun served as head coach at Fairmont State University from 2012 to 2017. His overall head coaching record currently stands at 295–158 (.651), including a 55–14 record at Utah State as of March 21, 2026. He earned Horizon League Coach of the Year honors in 2023 and Mountain West Coach of the Year honors in 2026. The possibility of Calhoun leaving Utah State comes after a successful season that saw the Aggies achieve a 1–1 record in NCAA Division I tournaments and a 1–1 record in the Tournament of Basketball Champions (TBC). He began his coaching career as a student assistant at Cincinnati in 2003, followed by assistant coaching roles at Walsh University and West Virginia University. Calhoun played college basketball at Cleveland State from 2001 to 2003. As of Saturday afternoon, neither Utah State nor Syracuse University had issued official statements regarding the reported interest in Calhoun. Representatives for Calhoun have not yet responded to requests for comment. The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Selection Committee is currently chaired by Keith Gill.
