Jason Momoa is set to star in a feature film adaptation of the popular video game Helldivers, with Justin Lin directing, Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions announced today. The film is currently slated for release on November 10, 2027, according to multiple reports.
The announcement confirms the project’s continued development, dispelling earlier concerns that the adaptation might be shelved. Lin’s involvement was previously known, but Momoa’s casting and the confirmed release date represent significant progress for the film, based on the game developed by Arrowhead Game Studios.
Momoa’s recent success in cinematic adaptations of video games, including his role in the 2025 film Minecraft, positions him as a key figure in bringing Helldivers to the big screen. He is also preparing to portray Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl film, potentially bolstering his appeal to fans of the Helldivers franchise. Prior to these roles, Momoa gained prominence for his portrayal of Ronon Dex in Stargate: Atlantis, as well as roles in Game of Thrones, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and Dune.
Helldivers 2, released nearly two years ago, has sold over 12 million copies, establishing a dedicated player base. The game is set in a future where humanity is governed by the Super Earth, a seemingly utopian society that relies on expendable soldiers – the Helldivers – to spread “managed democracy” by securing resources on hostile planets. The game’s premise draws heavily from the 1997 cult classic Starship Troopers, directed by Paul Verhoeven.
A new adaptation of Starship Troopers is also currently in development, promising a closer adherence to the original novel’s storyline. This suggests a strategic approach from Sony Pictures, positioning the Helldivers film as a more action-oriented and comedic take on the themes explored in Starship Troopers, while the latter adaptation aims for a more serious and faithful representation of the source material.
