Mexico World Cup 2026: Friendlies Confirmed Against Ghana, Serbia & Australia?

February 11, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Mexico’s national football federation is finalizing arrangements for three international friendly matches intended to prepare the national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico will co-host with the United States and Canada. According to sources within the Federación Mexicana de Futbol (FMF), negotiations are progressing with football associations representing Ghana, Serbia and Australia.

Although contracts have not yet been signed, these three nations are considered the leading candidates to face El Tricolor in the lead-up to the tournament. The selection of these opponents was reportedly a direct request from national team manager Javier Aguirre, who sought opponents that would realistically simulate the challenges Mexico is likely to encounter during the World Cup. “Javier asked for rivals that could resemble what the national team will face in the World Cup,” a source close to the FMF stated.

The proposed schedule for these matches includes fixtures on the following dates: a match against Ghana in late March, a contest with Serbia in early June, and a final preparation game against Australia in early November. The Australia match is scheduled just one week before the official start of the 2026 World Cup.

Mexico has already secured two victories earlier this year, providing a foundation for Aguirre’s preparations. The national team’s schedule includes further commitments, culminating in these three upcoming friendlies that are nearing official confirmation. The FMF retains the flexibility to adjust its plans should any negotiations fall through, but current indications suggest that Ghana, Serbia, and Australia will provide the final test for the national squad.

With the 2026 World Cup being held on home soil, the FMF and Aguirre are prioritizing meticulous preparation. Aguirre is focused on building a cohesive and competitive team capable of adapting to diverse playing styles. As the tournament approaches, the national team is focused on finalizing these crucial details.
