Jan van Ierland, recognized as the oldest man born in the Netherlands, has passed away at the age of 111. Van Ierland, who was born on May 5, 1914, in Tilburg, died peacefully and remained sharp-minded untill his final moments, according to his son.

Van Ierland’s life spanned a century marked by important global changes and conflicts. Throughout his 111 years, he maintained a strong conviction in the power of honesty, with his son noting, “In the 65 years of my life, there has never been an untrue word between us.”

A testament to his enduring spirit, Van Ierland played the piano for an astonishing 105 years. In a previous interview with the Noordhollands Dagblad, he expressed his gratitude for life and the people who enrich it, stating, “I am grateful every day that I live, and that I have people around me. People make life worthwhile.” He celebrated his 110th birthday in 2024, receiving a personal congratulation from Haarlem Mayor Jos Wienen.

Van Ierland attributed his longevity to a simple ideology: “A drink, a walk and good company keep your young.” He enjoyed a daily glass of port and continued to walk in the dunes until old age, maintaining a keen interest in current events.

His passing leaves a void,but his legacy of kindness and his calm demeanor are remembered by his family. “He turned 111 without ever hurting someone. That says everything about how he was in life,” his son shared.

Van Ierland became the oldest man born in the Netherlands following the death of Eelke Bakker in 2020. in 2024, he achieved the rare distinction of ‘Supercentenarian,’ a title for individuals exceeding 110 years of age. He was also the second-oldest resident in the Netherlands, with the oldest resident being 111-year-old John Huang, who was born in Vietnam.

The remarkable ability to find joy and adventure later in life was also exemplified by American dorothy Hoffner in 2023, who became the world’s oldest skydiver.
