james Van Der Beek Auctions ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Memorabilia to Benefit Cancer Research
Actor James Van der Beek is auctioning off a collection of memorabilia from his breakout role as Dawson Leery in the hit 1990s series Dawson’s Creek to raise funds for cancer research, following his recent public disclosure of his own cancer diagnosis. The auction, launched through Goldin, features items including scripts, wardrobe pieces, and signed photographs, offering fans a unique opportunity to own a piece of television history while supporting a critical cause.
Van Der Beek revealed his cancer diagnosis in November 2023, emphasizing the importance of early detection and screenings. The auction proceeds will benefit a range of cancer organizations, reflecting the actor’s desire to help others avoid the challenges he is currently facing. This initiative arrives as cancer continues to impact millions globally, and underscores the power of celebrity advocacy in driving awareness and funding for research. The auction is currently live and will run through February 29th, with items ranging in estimated value.
During a July appearance on Today, Van Der beek spoke about sharing his diagnosis with his children, noting the unexpected positive impact. “When you tell them what you’re doing and you tell them the approach, they can see it and they can feel it, and I think its also, your journey is their journey,” he said. “I have kids making me tea. ‘Dad, what do you need?’ There’s been a lot of beauty that’s come out of it, but I would love to save everybody [from] this journey, which is why I’m saying get screened.”
The auction coincides with continued support from Van Der Beek’s Dawson’s Creek castmates. In September, the cast reunited for a live reading of the show’s pilot at the Richard Rodgers Theater on Broadway, organized to benefit F Cancer in his honor. Though initially unable to attend due to illness, Van Der Beek ultimately appeared via video message.
“I can’t believe I’m not there,” he shared in the video. “I can’t believe I don’t get to hug my castmates, my stunning cast, in person, and I just wanted to stand on that stage and thank every single person in this theater for being here tonight – from the cast to the crew to everybody who donated their time and has been so generous. And especially every single last one of you. You’re the best fans in the world. Thank you for coming.”
