Jacob Greber to replace Laura Tingle as 7.30 political editor, ABC announces

Greber Named Political Editor at ABC’s 7.30

Experienced Journalist Steps Into Key Role After Tingle’s Transition

A veteran of Australian journalism, Jacob Greber will assume the position of political editor for the ABC’s flagship current affairs program, 7.30, bringing nearly three decades of experience covering the intersection of economics, politics, and global events.

New Leadership for 7.30

Greber’s appointment follows the departure of Laura Tingle, who recently transitioned to the role of the public broadcaster’s global affairs editor. He currently serves as the ABC’s chief digital political correspondent, a position he will continue alongside his new duties.

“It’s an incredible time to join 7.30 with Sarah Ferguson and the team. Our audience rightly demands clarity and insight about the people who govern us and the challenges we face as a nation,” Greber stated.

“I also salute Laura Tingle — an absolute class act and fearless force of nature. I’m humbled and thrilled to pick up where she’s left off.”

From Copy Boy to Political Correspondent

Greber began his career in the press gallery as a copyboy, gaining foundational experience in the world of journalism. He then covered state politics in Queensland for The Courier-Mail before relocating to Switzerland, the country of his father’s origin.

While in Switzerland, he contributed to the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation and later worked for Bloomberg News in Zurich, focusing on the European economy and international banking. This expertise proved invaluable upon his return to Australia in 2012.

He joined the Australian Financial Review, initially as an economics correspondent in Canberra. A subsequent three-year assignment saw him serve as the publication’s US correspondent in Washington D.C., before returning to Australia as a senior political correspondent. He joined the ABC in 2024.

ABC director of news, Justin Stevens, expressed his enthusiasm for Greber’s appointment, noting his significant contributions to the ABC, particularly during the recent election cycle. “Jacob has been a fantastic addition to the ABC and has just come off a superb election campaign,” he said.

“7.30 is a flagship program for ABC News and Jacob joins a brilliant team. We can’t wait to have him on the program.”

Greber will officially begin his new role on July 7. Tingle will commence her position as global affairs editor in early July, building on her six years as 7.30’s political reporter.
