IWC Schaffhausen Unveils 2026 Watch Collection at Watches and Wonders

April 17, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

IWC unveils crownless space-rated watch at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026 At the Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026 exhibition, IWC Schaffhausen introduced the Venturer Vertical Drive, a mechanical timepiece engineered for extraterrestrial environments and distinguished by the absence of a traditional crown. The watch, presented during the brand’s annual novelties showcase, features a vertical clutch mechanism and a constant-force escapement designed to maintain precision under zero-gravity conditions. The development responds to growing interest from commercial spaceflight operators and research institutions seeking reliable timekeeping tools for orbital and suborbital missions. IWC’s engineering team collaborated with materials specialists to select alloys and lubricants resistant to thermal cycling and radiation exposure, while ensuring the movement remains serviceable by astronauts wearing pressurized gloves. The Venturer Vertical Drive joins two other 2026 releases highlighted at the event: an updated Portugieser Eternal Calendar with a 400-year cycle correction and a reimagined Ingenieur Automatic featuring a softened case profile and revised dial layout. All three models incorporate IWC’s proprietary Pellaton winding system, now optimized for longer power reserves and reduced wear. Industry observers noted the significance of launching a space-certified mechanical watch without a crown—a design choice that eliminates a common point of failure in pressurized environments. Instead, time-setting and winding are achieved through a bidirectional rotating bezel and a pusher integrated into the caseband, both operable with limited dexterity. IWC confirmed the Venturer Vertical Drive will enter limited production in the third quarter of 2026, with initial allocations reserved for partners in the aerospace sector. No official pricing or distribution details have been disclosed. The brand did not respond to requests for comment on whether the watch has undergone formal qualification testing by space agencies.
