It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley: A Sundance Premiere & Musical Tribute

Jeff Buckley Documentary ‘it’s Never Over’ Captivates Sundance with Emotional Premiere

PARK CITY, UT – A hushed reverence fell over the audience at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on January 24th, immediately followed by thunderous applause, after Ben Harper’s poignant rendition of “Hallelujah” following the premiere of Amy berg’s documentary, It’s never Over, Jeff Buckley. Harper, visibly moved, explained he performs the song infrequently, offering it as a tribute to the late singer whose interpretation he considers a masterclass in transforming a song into a deeply spiritual experience.

Berg’s documentary is a deeply personal exploration of Buckley’s life and enduring legacy. The film revisits the story of the iconic singer-songwriter,celebrated for his extraordinary vocal range and his seminal 1994 album,Grace, before his tragic death in 1997. It’s Never Over avoids simple biography, instead constructing a layered portrait through previously unseen footage, intimate voice recordings, and revealing interviews with those who knew him best.

Central to Berg’s approach is framing Buckley’s narrative through his meaningful relationships. The film intimately explores his connections with Rebecca Moore and Joan Wasser (of Joan As Police Woman), recognizing the profound impact these women had on his life and artistry. “After immersing myself in the archive – his letters, his messages – it became clear that telling his story through his love stories would be the most authentic way to honor Jeff,” Berg stated.

the documentary doesn’t shy away from the complexities of Buckley’s character. It portrays a man grappling with the pressures of fame and the superficiality of the music industry, despite his undeniable talent. Buckley’s discomfort with being labeled one of People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People” is highlighted, illustrating his desire for genuine connection and artistic integrity. It’s Never Over reveals a vulnerable side of the artist, shaped by love, loss, depression, joy, and an unwavering commitment to authenticity. The film benefits from contributions from Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, and Harper’s moving post-premiere performance, adding further emotional weight to the already powerful narrative.
