Italian Boxer Angela Carini Reports Online Abuse Following Olympic Bout
PARIS – Italian boxer Angela Carini is facing a barrage of online abuse after her August 1, 2024, defeat to Imane Khelif of Algeria at the Paris Olympics, according to reports. The harassment follows a recent policy change by World Boxing, the international governing body for the sport, mandating sex testing for female athletes.
Carini’s loss to Khelif has become a focal point in the ongoing debate surrounding fairness and eligibility in women’s sports. The new World Boxing policy aims to ensure only females compete in the women’s category, and Khelif has appealed the policy, which will prevent her from competing pending genetic testing results. The situation has ignited a wave of online commentary, much of which has been directed at Carini.
The abuse reportedly includes personal attacks and accusations of unfair play, despite Carini having adhered to all existing regulations. The incident underscores the intense scrutiny and emotional toll athletes face in the context of evolving gender eligibility rules.
“There will be a strong form of testing” for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, former President Donald Trump stated on August 5, when asked about potential genetic testing.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has also responded, with new president Kirsty coventry initiating a task force to address gender eligibility issues.
This incident occurs amid broader discussions about inclusivity and competitive equity in sports, as governing bodies grapple with defining eligibility criteria in the face of scientific advancements and evolving societal norms.
