Israel Escalates Strikes on Hezbollah in Lebanon Amid Rising Casualties

May 27, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Tuesday that his country is “at war with Hezbollah” and ordered the military to intensify strikes against the Lebanese militant group, marking a significant escalation in hostilities that has already resulted in multiple casualties. In a video statement, Netanyahu asserted that Israel’s offensive had “eliminated over 600 terrorists in the last few weeks” and vowed to “deal them a crushing blow” by increasing the scale and intensity of attacks.

The Israeli military reported launching a wave of strikes across Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah infrastructure in the eastern Bekaa Valley and other regions. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), more than 100 Hezbollah sites were struck, with the group retaliating through 22 drone and rocket attacks. Lebanese local media cited reports of 12 deaths in the village of Mashghara following an IDF strike, which the military claimed targeted “terrorists” identified in the area. The IDF also issued an evacuation order for the southern town of Nabatieh, warning of potential further strikes.

Hezbollah confirmed its attacks, stating that its operations targeted Israeli soldiers, tanks, and military installations. The group’s response came amid ongoing tensions despite a 45-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel that was extended earlier this month. However, cross-border violence has persisted, with both sides accusing each other of violating the agreement. The IDF emphasized that its actions are focused on dismantling Hezbollah’s capabilities, citing the group’s role as a “Shia Muslim armed group backed by Iran.”

Netanyahu’s remarks followed pressure from within his government, including far-right ministers such as Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir, who have advocated for expanding the campaign into Beirut. The prime minister’s statement underscores a shift in Israel’s approach, moving from targeted strikes to a broader offensive against Hezbollah’s network. The escalation coincides with heightened regional tensions, as Iran and its allies continue to support Hezbollah’s military activities in the region.

Netanyahu vows to 'wipe out' Hezbollah as Israeli strikes intensify in southern Lebanon

Lebanese authorities have reported 31 fatalities from Israeli strikes on Tuesday, according to The Times of Israel, though the exact toll remains under investigation. The conflict has strained the already fragile stability of southern Lebanon, where civilian populations have been increasingly affected by the violence. International calls for de-escalation have so far failed to halt the cycle of retaliation, with both sides framing their actions as necessary to counter existential threats.
