Syrian Chancellor Faisal Al-Sibani asserted that Israeli actions have “stunned” Syria and elaborate efforts toward normalization with Israel, according to a recent interview. Al-Sibani accused Israel of supporting “groups of outlaws” that hindered resolution of conflicts between Bedouins and the Druze community within Syria.
The remarks come amid a broader push by syrian officials for the lifting of international sanctions, framing them as unjust and detrimental to the Syrian people. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa recently made his debut at the United Nations, directly appealing for the complete removal of sanctions “to stop chaining the Syrian people.” Al-Sibani welcomed recent U.S. measures to ease sanctions, stating they were “received with great support among the Syrian people.”
Al-Sibani stated, “What Israel did only complicate things and put the Druss in a very difficult and embarrassing situation.” He further claimed Israel “supported outlaws, groups of outlaws, and this obstructed and prevented the Syrian government from solving the problem between the Bedouins and the Drusos.”
Al-sharaa, describing a history of “injustice, deprivation and oppression” following the fall of the Assad regime, told diplomats, “Then we get up to claim our dignity.” the Syrian government views the lifting of sanctions as crucial to restoring dignity and stability.
