Suzuki Prepares Burgman 150 to Challenge Maxi-Scooter Rivals

New Model Aims to Disrupt Dominant Honda PCX and Yamaha NMAX Market

Suzuki is gearing up to enter the competitive maxi-scooter segment, developing a new model to directly challenge the reign of Honda’s PCX and Yamaha’s NMAX. The long-rumored project, codenamed Burgman 150, signals Suzuki’s intent to capture a share of this lucrative market.

Burgman 150: A Shared Platform for Global Ambitions

The upcoming Suzuki Burgman 150 has been a topic of discussion for at least two years. Reports suggest it will share its foundational platform with the Haojue UHR150, a scooter manufactured in China. This collaboration is reminiscent of Suzuki’s previous joint venture with Haojue on the Inazuma 250 model.

If the Burgman 150 indeed utilizes the UHR150’s underpinnings, it’s expected to sport a sharp, aggressive aesthetic. The design is described as intimidating at the front and sporty towards the rear, positioning it as a compact yet potent contender in the maxi-scooter class.

Feature-Rich Offering Expected

Sources indicate the Burgman 150 will be equipped with a comprehensive suite of standard features. These are anticipated to include full LED lighting, a start-stop system (SSS), dual disc brakes with single-channel ABS, a smart key system, and a fully digital instrument panel. Ample under-seat storage is also expected.

Performance for Urban Commutes

In terms of powertrain, the Burgman 150 is projected to feature a 149cc, single-cylinder SOHC engine. This unit, equipped with fuel injection, is estimated to deliver a maximum power output of 14.4 hp at 8,500 rpm and a peak torque of 14.2 Nm at 6,500 rpm. These specifications are considered well-suited for urban riding conditions.

The Indonesian maxi-scooter market alone saw over 500,000 units of the Yamaha NMAX and Honda PCX sold in 2023, highlighting the segment’s robust demand. This figure underscores the significant opportunity Suzuki is targeting with the Burgman 150. Whether the new model can successfully challenge the established leaders remains to be seen, as all details are currently based on speculation and unofficial information.
