“Assassin’s Creed Shadows” Receives Final Major DLC, Ubisoft Signals shift in Post-Launch Support
Tokyo, Japan – Ubisoft Quebec has released “Awaji Claw,” the second and final significant downloadable content package for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, signaling a departure from the extensive post-launch support model seen in recent franchise entries. Despite exceeding sales expectations and ranking as the second-most successful launch in Assassin’s Creed history-trailing only Valhalla-Ubisoft will focus on “smaller, more refined” updates for the game’s second year.
This decision marks a notable change for the series, wich has consistently delivered two or more large-scale DLC expansions for titles like Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla. Even the recently released assassin’s Creed Visions received a paid expansion after its initial launch. The contrast between Shadows’ commercial success and the curtailed DLC plans has sparked discussion within the Assassin’s Creed community.
Ubisoft Quebec’s shift in focus is likely due to a reallocation of advancement resources toward future projects. These include a full remake of Black Flag and previously announced new titles such as Hexe and a new multiplayer Assassin’s Creed project. A project reportedly set in the post-Civil War United States has been rumored to be cancelled. Ubisoft stated during the first week of Shadows’ release that its performance “exceeded expectations.” The company’s decision suggests a strategic prioritization of upcoming titles over continued large-scale expansion of Shadows.
