Iran-Israel War: Caspian Sea Strikes & Hormuz Strait Threaten Global Conflict & Oil Supply

March 24, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

TEHRAN — The war in the Middle East escalated dramatically this week with the Israeli military confirming strikes targeting Iranian naval assets in the Caspian Sea, a move Iran’s Foreign Ministry warned could ignite a broader regional conflict. The attacks, which reportedly hit missile ships, shipyards, and command infrastructure, mark a significant expansion of the conflict into a previously untouched theater.

According to a statement released by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on March 18, 2026, Air Force aircraft, guided by Naval and Military Intelligence, carried out the operation in northern Iran. Footage released by the IDF showed what it described as the bombing of Iranian missile ships. The IDF stated the strikes targeted facilities at an Iranian naval port subordinate to Iran’s army, where dozens of military vessels were docked, including missile ships and patrol boats.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in calls with regional counterparts, characterized the attacks as a destabilizing act with consequences extending beyond bilateral tensions. The Iranian Foreign Ministry emphasized potential threats to maritime safety, ecological stability, and regional cooperation frameworks in the Caspian basin, a critical zone shared by several states.

The strikes in the Caspian Sea represent a significant geographic and strategic shift, extending the war’s maritime arena beyond the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, according to analysts. Bandar Anzali, home to the main base of the Iranian Navy’s northern fleet, was reportedly a key target. The port plays a central role in maritime trade between Iran and Russia, a route that has become increasingly important since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Intelligence suggests the Caspian Sea has become a key smuggling corridor, with Iranian and Russian ships routinely switching off tracking systems to transfer cargo, including drones, missiles, and ammunition, between Iranian ports and the Russian port of Astrakhan, according to reports.

Simultaneously, tensions remain exceptionally high in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil supply. Iran has asserted control over the strait, stating that vessels not linked to its adversaries may only pass under coordination with Tehran. US officials have alleged mining activity in the area, a claim Iran denies.

The escalating conflict is impacting global energy markets, with shipping companies halting operations amid fears of attacks and instability. Analysts warn of a potential global energy crisis if the situation deteriorates further, potentially mirroring historic oil crises in scale and duration.

Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, with reports indicating US signals of a possible diplomatic deal amid the war’s escalation. However, Tehran has rejected claims of direct negotiations, accusing Washington of psychological pressure. Iran has simultaneously warned that escalation could continue, suggesting potential wider retaliation across the region.

The IDF has confirmed carrying out over 200 strikes against Iranian regime targets in western and central Iran in the days leading up to the Caspian Sea operation. The expansion of the battlefield has been accompanied by mounting humanitarian concerns, including environmental and economic fallout, and rising civilian casualties across multiple regions.

Iran has indicated it could shut down Gulf shipping entirely should further attacks occur, raising alarms about global trade disruption. The situation remains fluid, with both sides signaling a willingness to escalate further, and diplomatic efforts struggling to maintain pace with the rapid developments on the ground.
