Apple plans Expansion of iPhone Satellite Capabilities, Including Photo Sharing and Enhanced Maps
CUPERTINO, CA - November 10, 2023 – Apple is developing new features to expand the satellite connectivity of its iPhones, potentially allowing users to send photos via satellite, access improved 5G coverage, and utilize satellite-enhanced navigation in Apple Maps, according to a report by bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Introduced with the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature in 2022 and expanded to include Messages via Satellite with iOS 18, Apple’s satellite capabilities currently offer limited communication options in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi access. the planned enhancements aim to broaden the utility of this technology, offering more thorough support for users in remote locations and potentially improving network coverage overall.
Gurman reports Apple is working towards enabling 5G NTN (Non-Terrestrial Networks) support, which would allow iPhones to connect to satellites to boost cellular signal strength. Additionally, the company is exploring integrating satellite connectivity into Apple Maps for navigation assistance where customary signals are unavailable.
Beyond functionality, Apple is also focused on improving the user experience. Current satellite connectivity requires users to point their iPhones directly at the sky. Apple is reportedly developing technology to maintain a connection even without a clear view of the sky, potentially enabling indoor satellite access. The company is also creating an API to allow third-party developers to integrate satellite connectivity into their apps.
Apple has previously taken a measured approach to rolling out satellite features, waiting two years between the introduction of Emergency SOS via Satellite and Messages via Satellite. A timeline for the release of these new features remains unknown.
