Intrinsic Robotics Acquired by Google to Boost Physical AI in Manufacturing

February 26, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Google is absorbing its robotics AI unit, Intrinsic, after five years as a separate entity within Alphabet, signaling a renewed commitment to physical artificial intelligence and its application in manufacturing. The move, announced Thursday, will see Intrinsic operate as a “distinct group” within Google, leveraging the company’s Gemini AI model and Google Cloud infrastructure, alongside close collaboration with the Google DeepMind team.

Intrinsic, launched in 2021 as part of Alphabet’s “Other Bets” portfolio, developed software tools designed to simplify robot deployment and operation, aiming to lower costs and increase accessibility. The company’s core offering, described as “the Android of robotics,” provides a universal platform for developers to create applications compatible with a wide range of robots, cameras, and sensors. Meta has reportedly pursued a similar strategy, highlighting the growing interest in standardized robotics software development.

The integration of Intrinsic into Google is driven by a focus on “adaptive intelligence,” enabling robots to perceive, reason, and respond to dynamic changes in their environment and operational processes. This capability is seen as crucial for advancing the utilize of robots in complex manufacturing settings. According to sources, the goal is to create robots capable of handling real-world tasks with greater autonomy and flexibility.

This acquisition complements Google’s existing robotics initiatives, including its 2017 acquisition of Boston Dynamics. Google’s DeepMind team has also previously engaged in robotics research and development. The consolidation of these efforts under the Google umbrella suggests a strategic shift towards a more unified approach to physical AI.

The move comes as Alphabet refines its portfolio of ventures, prioritizing those with the clearest path to commercialization and scalability. Integrating Intrinsic directly into Google allows for greater synergy and resource allocation, accelerating the development and deployment of AI-powered robotics solutions. The company has not yet detailed specific timelines or product roadmaps following the integration.
