Intervision winner Sparks outcry in Russia Amid Audience payment Allegations
MOSCOW – the victory of Ukrainian contestant Alina Zagitova at the Intervision song contest held in Amsterdam on September 23, 2023, has ignited discontent within Russia, fueled by reports of a paid audience adn low viewership of the live broadcast. The controversy centers on allegations that attendees were compensated both for their presence and for demonstrative enthusiasm during the event, raising questions about the authenticity of the audience reception.
Intervision, a prominent international song competition, concluded its 2023 iteration with Zagitova’s win, but the result has been met with criticism in Russia, notably online. Reports from Insider detail claims that audience members received financial incentives to attend and actively cheer, prompting accusations of a manufactured atmosphere. Simultaneously, the live stream of the program garnered fewer than 10,000 viewers globally on YouTube, a figure that has drawn scrutiny regarding the event’s overall reach and engagement.
The contest, organized by the European Broadcasting Union, aims to showcase musical talent from across participating nations. This year’s event took place in the Netherlands, with the next edition slated for Saudi Arabia in 2024. The allegations surrounding the audience and the low streaming numbers have intensified existing tensions surrounding international competitions and perceptions of fairness, particularly given the current geopolitical climate.
