Berlin – A surge in problematic online gambling behavior is prompting renewed calls for stricter regulation and increased preventative measures in Germany, according to data released by the Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA). The findings, coinciding with the full implementation of the new State Treaty on Gambling as of July 1, 2021, reveal that nearly one in five individuals engaging with online casino games exhibits signs of problematic or addictive behavior.
The BZgA’s research indicates that approximately 430,000 people in Germany are currently affected by problematic gambling or gambling addiction. Young adult males under 25, individuals with a migration background, and those with lower incomes are identified as particularly vulnerable groups. “Online gambling is – in comparison to other forms of gambling – associated with an increased risk of addiction,” stated Prof. Dr. Martin Dietrich, the then-Interim Head of the BZgA, in June 2021. “This increased risk is due to the fact that online gambling can be played anytime, anywhere.”
The new State Treaty on Gambling aims to establish clearer structures and enhance player and youth protection nationwide through the issuance of licenses for online gambling. However, Daniela Ludwig, the Federal Government’s Drug Commissioner, cautioned that the treaty’s success hinges on rigorous enforcement. “The supervisory authority must not be a toothless tiger, but must intervene rigorously if any violations occur,” she said. Ludwig emphasized the high risk of addiction associated with online gambling, warning against complacency.
The BZgA offers a range of preventative programs, including “Check dein Spiel” (Check Your Game), providing information and resources to combat gambling addiction. A dedicated telephone hotline is available for those seeking assist and guidance, offering confidential support and referrals to local assistance programs. The hotline, accessible at 0800-1372700, is staffed by trained counselors and operates Monday through Thursday from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and Friday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
The accessibility of online gambling – its 24/7 availability and ease of access – is a key factor contributing to the increased risk of addiction. The BZgA’s data highlights that the immediacy of online games, unlike traditional forms of gambling, can quickly lead to problematic behavior.
