Makassar Export Drive Seeks Direct Routes and Regulatory Harmony
South Sulawesi is actively pursuing strategies to boost its export performance, with a focus on direct shipping and streamlined regulations to compete in the global market. This initiative aims to capitalize on the region’s high-quality commodities and expand its international trade footprint.
Meeting Highlights Export Challenges
A recent gathering in Makassar brought together Indonesian Quarantine Agency representatives and local exporters to discuss hurdles in international trade. Sahat Manaor Panggabean, the agency’s head, led the meeting. The objective was to improve export procedures and boost the region’s economic output.

“We know South Sulawesi has many high-quality export commodities, and we want to encourage direct exports from Makassar to destination countries, without transiting through Surabaya,”

Exporters have identified variations in international regulations as a major obstacle. Recent data shows that inconsistencies in documentation requirements cause many export rejections, impacting approximately 15% of all shipments (Industry Report 2025).
Logistical and Regulatory Hurdles
The agency is aiming to ensure that local products meet international standards. Proper certification is crucial to facilitate trade. The primary export destinations for goods from South Sulawesi include China, South Korea, and several other nations.
Several business representatives raised concerns regarding export logistics, product handling, and the costs involved. Sahat assured attendees that all fees are transparent and go directly to the state treasury.
Arif Pabentengi, Chairman of the South Sulawesi Export Affairs Association, highlighted the importance of direct cargo flights. He specifically mentioned the need for improved logistics services at airports and seaports to enable direct shipping to key destinations.
