Indonesian Coordinating Minister Urges Peace in Aceh and Stability in Papua

August 16, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

On August 16, 2026, Minister of Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago publicly urged citizens across Indonesia to maintain peace in Aceh and ensure stability in Papua. Speaking in Jakarta, Djamari emphasized that while expressing public grievances remains a protected constitutional right, demonstrations must strictly avoid violence, property damage, and the desecration of national symbols.

Balancing Regional Autonomy and National Unity in Aceh

The government continues to honor the special administrative status granted to Aceh under national law. According to statements released by Antara and RRI, the peace achieved in Aceh over the past two decades requires continuous protection through active dialogue and mutual respect rather than unrest.

Tensions in the region escalated following recent public demonstrations involving the removal of the Red and White flag and the alleged desecration of the Garuda Pancasila state emblem. Responding to these incidents, Djamari instructed law enforcement agencies to conduct objective investigations into the motives and actions of those involved. Under Law Number 24 of 2009, the national flag and state symbol demand absolute respect. Any proven criminal acts or property destructions resulting from these protests will face strict judicial prosecution, according to Kemenko Polkam officials.

Maintaining Public Order and Safety Across Papua

Shifting focus to Indonesia’s easternmost region, the Ministry of Political and Security Affairs stressed that peaceful expression in Papua remains fully protected by state law. However, security officials noted that recent demonstrations in Central Papua descended into riots that left multiple law enforcement officers injured. Djamari explicitly warned against letting legitimate advocacy devolve into violent provocations or unlawful disruptions.

Brigjen TNI Honi Havana, Head of the Bureau of Public Relations, Data, and Information at Kemenko Polkam, confirmed that authorities are closely monitoring security shifts. The agency is actively coordinating cross-sector operations alongside the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police (Polri), and local municipal governments. Communities have been formally urged to ignore unverified rumors and instead rely on verified institutional updates.

Navigating Legal Frameworks and Public Security

As security forces maintain heightened vigilance across both provinces, the overarching federal directive remains clear. Upholding public safety requires balancing the constitutional right to protest with an unyielding commitment to the rule of law and national integrity.
