Indonesia Prepares Galang Island for Medical Aid to Gazans
Jakarta – The Indonesian government is finalizing plans to utilize facilities on Galang Island, Riau Islands, to provide medical assistance to Palestinians impacted by the ongoing conflict in Gaza. State Secretary Minister Prasetyo hadi confirmed the governmentS efforts, noting the island’s previous capacity for healthcare services.
Galang Island previously housed an emergency COVID-19 hospital established in April 2020, leveraging its strategic location near Hang Nadim International Airport and existing infrastructure, including reliable access to electricity and water. This facility, originally built as a camp for Vietnamese refugees, was renovated to accommodate up to one thousand patients.
The hospital complex is divided into three zones: staff accommodation, isolation and observation areas, and a follow-up care zone. This design prioritizes effective isolation protocols, notably for incoming patients, as initially intended for returning migrant workers.
Minister Hadi emphasized that a thorough assessment of the current condition of the facilities is underway, as they have not been fully utilized for two to three years. The government will carefully evaluate infrastructure and logistical requirements before finalizing the plan to adapt the facility for Gazan patients.
President Prabowo Subianto has instructed the Defense Ministry and the Foreign Affairs Ministry to develop a comprehensive system and procedure for delivering this medical aid. His directive includes providing medical care for two thousand Gazans affected by the conflict for a defined period.
The President has also indicated readiness to evacuate an initial group of one thousand Gaza residents, including those wounded, orphaned, or experiencing trauma consequently of the conflict.
Hasan nasbi, Head of the Presidential Communications Office, clarified that this initiative is a humanitarian effort focused on providing medical treatment and does not involve the permanent relocation of Gaza residents.Patients will be returned to Gaza upon recovery.
