Twenty Reported Missing Amid Ongoing Unrest in Indonesia Following Protest Crackdown
Jakarta, Indonesia – Authorities are searching for twenty individuals reported missing following widespread protests across Indonesia that erupted last week, escalating tensions against President Prabowo‘s ten-month-old governance. The demonstrations, the most significant as Prabowo, a former general, assumed power, initially focused on grievances regarding police conduct but have broadened to encompass wider discontent with the government.
The escalating crisis comes as Indonesia grapples with the aftermath of violent clashes in Jakarta and other cities. While official figures remain fluid, Chief Economic minister Airlangga hartarto confirmed Monday that eight people have died in the protests. More than 700 people were injured in Jakarta alone, according to Governor Pramono Anung, with infrastructure damage estimated at $3.4 million. Over 1,200 protesters have been detained by Jakarta Police. On Monday, President prabowo defended the actions of security forces, announcing the promotion of 40 police personnel injured during the unrest. “There might be police members who were wrong… But don’t forget dozens of officers who sacrificed themselves,” Prabowo stated during a visit to a hospital treating injured officers. The military was deployed across jakarta on Monday as hundreds again gathered outside parliament, with further clashes reported in multiple cities.
The protests represent a significant challenge to Prabowo’s authority and raise questions about the stability of his government. The search for the missing individuals is ongoing, and further demonstrations are anticipated as the situation remains volatile.Authorities have not yet released details regarding the circumstances surrounding the disappearances.
