On July 14 of this year, the staff of the Latvian Puppet Theater met at the opening of the 77th season, in order to resume active activities both in the creation of new productions and to return to the audience by playing performances after the summer vacation. In total, four new productions and an updated version of one performance will be offered at the beginning of the season, the representatives of the theater inform the portal “Delfi”.

Taking into account the epidemiological situation in the country, performances will be resumed in August in the Great Hall of the theater, where up to 60 spectators can be accommodated within a safe distance. The show season will traditionally be opened with the legendary production “And Again Pifs”, which has been played without interruption for 37 years. This gold classic show will be shown on August 1.
The August repertoire and information for spectators who have tickets to performances canceled during the emergency will be published on the theater’s website and on social networks on July 17. The information can be followed theater website a “Facebook”.
In July, it is planned to renew the student show “Pepija Garzeķe” with Elīna Bojarkins in the title role, as well as to start rehearsals for four new productions. In the big hall, Sergei Aksakov’s fairy tale “Pink Flower” will be staged by the director Maris Koristins in the Russian troupe.
Three new productions are planned in the Latvian troupe at the beginning of the season. The debut film for young people and adults, staging Rūdolfs Blaumanis ‘”In the Shadow of Death”, will be made by Latvian Puppet Theater actor Rūdolfs Apse, who supplemented A. Zelverovič’ s Warsaw Theater Academy in Kārlis Vērdiņš’s “Aunt of Dill” will be directed by Edgars Kaufelds, while Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “Princess on a Pea” will be staged in the puppet technique by Vija Blūzma.
Two more new productions are expected in the second half of the autumn. Directed by Edgar Niklason, the Welsh legend of King Arthur will turn into a production for school-age children and young people “The Knight of the Round Table”, but the Christmas repertoire will be complemented by a performance by Vija Blūzma based on Margarita Stāraste’s winter fairy tales.
In his solemn address, the director of the theater Vilnis Beķeris called on the team to be creative and not to lower the quality bar to the challenges in full time, when the theater is affected by both the pandemic and the planned renovations of the building.
It has already been reported that the research carried out in connection with the planned building insulation works has identified the need to strengthen the foundations and structures of the Latvian Puppet Theater building, as a result of which SJSC Valsts nekustamie īpašumi has expanded the scope of forthcoming renovation works. Already at the end of this summer, the theater workshops, puppet and decoration warehouses will be moved to temporary premises at 106 Lāčplēša Street, while the rest of the team will be able to continue working in the theater building until the actual start of repairs planned for spring 2021.
