Imran Khan Returned to Jail After Brief Hospital Visit, Sparking Controversy

August 21, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

On August 21, 2026, jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was briefly transferred from prison to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences hospital in Islamabad before being declared medically fit and returned to prison within hours, according to Reuters, Al Jazeera, and The Guardian. The surprise move sparked fierce condemnation from his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, which alleged that authorities violated a Supreme Court directive.

Contempt Allegations and Supreme Court Directives

The swift transfer and return of the former premier drew immediate legal challenges. According to Reuters, Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party announced plans to file a contempt petition against the government. Party representatives argued that the decision directly breached a Supreme Court order issued earlier in the week. According to the party’s interpretation of the ruling, Khan should have remained under medical supervision until at least mid-September.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated on X that authorities utilized the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences instead of the court-mentioned Shifa International Hospital because of a security situation created by PTI workers along the intended route, as reported by Reuters. Furthermore, party officials noted that Khan was denied access to his personal physician, constituting an additional violation of judicial mandates. Sohail Afridi, the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, characterized the maneuver during a press conference as contempt of the Supreme Court.

Prison Health Claims and Public Reaction

Uzma Khan, the sister of the former prime minister who attended his early morning medical examination, informed reporters that her brother claimed he was subjected to repeated torture while incarcerated. According to Reuters, Khan displayed a patch over one eye during the check-up but otherwise appeared stable and fit. Representatives for the interior and law ministries, along with jail authorities, did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment regarding the torture allegations.

Public apprehension surrounding Khan’s health and his abrupt return to custody has intensified political volatility in the capital. Supporters gathered overnight along Islamabad roadways, showering flowers on the transport vehicle. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry told ARY News that hospital admission depended strictly on medical necessity as determined by attending professionals. In response to these developments, regional leaders indicated that preparations for a protest march scheduled for September 27 have picked up, magnifying the urgency for proper legal representation and civil conflict resolution.

Institutional Response and the Path Forward

Khan has remained imprisoned since August 2023. Medical evaluations were conducted by a specialized team of qualified professionals, including a cardiologist, an ophthalmologist, and a physician. While government officials maintain that the brief hospital stay fulfilled all necessary medical evaluations under secure conditions, political opposition leaders insist that judicial authority was bypassed.
