Iggy Pop Electrifies Buenos Aires Return with Stooges Classics and New material
Buenos Aires, Argentina – November 3, 2023 – Iggy Pop delivered a performance brimming with raw energy at the Movistar Arena on Friday night, marking a triumphant return to Argentina after a lengthy absence. The ex-Stooges frontman captivated a sold-out crowd with a setlist spanning his prolific career, from seminal punk anthems to tracks from his latest album, Every Loser (2023).
Backed by a band Iggy Pop playfully dubbed “The Tropicans” – featuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner, keyboardist Joan Wasser (Joan As Police Woman),bassist Brad truax, drummer Urian Hackney, trombonist Corey King, and trumpeter Pan Amsterdam – Pop navigated a dynamic show that showcased both the ferocity of his past and the vitality of his present.
Early in the set, sound issues briefly obscured Pop’s vocals during performances of “Raw Power” and “I Got a Right,” but the energy surged during “gimme Danger.” The concert reached a peak with renditions of two David Bowie-collaborated hits from 1977,”The Passenger” and “Lust for Life,” the latter becoming a cathartic moment connecting Pop with a multi-generational audience.
The performance included a deep dive into The Stooges’ catalog with powerful versions of “Death Trip” and “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” culminating in Pop venturing into the crowd. Further Stooges classics like “Search and Destroy,” “Down on the Street,” and “1970” followed.
Pop also incorporated material from Lust for Life, performing ”Some Weird Sin,” and introduced tracks from Every Loser, including “Frenzy” and “Modern Day Rip Off.” A unique segment saw the band launch into “L.A. Blues” from Funhouse before Pop interjected with a verse from David Bowie’s “Nightclubbing.” Nods to deeper cuts included “I’m Bored” from the 1979 album New Values and a cover of Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Real Wild Child” (originally recorded by Pop in 1986). “Funtime,” originally from the Idiot (1977), was delivered with heightened electricity.
The main set concluded with a cover of “Louie Louie” and a final, powerful performance of “Loose” from Funhouse.
The concert was widely celebrated by fans and critics alike, solidifying Iggy Pop’s status as a true legend and demonstrating the enduring power of his music. The reciprocal energy between Pop and the Argentine audience underscored a connection built over decades of a career marked by both highs and lows.
