IDF Destroys Hezbollah Tunnel Network at Strategic Ali al-Taher Ridge

September 11, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The Israeli military has destroyed a major Hezbollah underground infrastructure complex on the strategic Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, utilizing more than 1,100 tons of explosives to demolish subterranean passages and command centers roughly 15 kilometers from the Israeli border, according to official statements.

Demolishing the Ali al-Taher Underground Complex

The operation targeted a subterranean network extending over two kilometers beneath the disputed highland in southern Lebanon. According to the Israel Defense Forces, the bunker system was built over two decades with Iranian funding and planning. It housed a central command facility belonging to Hezbollah’s Badr unit, along with weapons storage rooms, living quarters, generators, and kitchens capable of sustaining fighters underground for extended periods.

Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that the military operation triggered a powerful blast that sent heavy tremors through Nabatieh and surrounding towns. Financial Times coverage highlighted the sheer scale of the demolition, noting that the military deployed over 1,100 tons of explosives to neutralize the tunnel system. Haaretz and Reuters confirmed that troops from the IDF’s 36th Division completed clearing the area after establishing operational control over both the surface terrain and the subterranean network.

Strategic Control and Security Zone Consolidation

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a joint statement declaring that Israeli forces will maintain their presence in the area to prevent the militant group from rebuilding its military capabilities. Netanyahu called the operation a major advance for northern Israeli communities, asserting that the ridge no longer poses a direct threat.

The Ali al-Taher ridge has emerged as one of the most heavily contested zones of the ongoing conflict. reported that the latest explosions followed weeks of intensive Israeli strikes and ground operations that pushed deeper into southern Lebanon, solidifying a de facto security zone. This campaign has unfolded despite a ceasefire framework brokered by the United States in June, which envisioned a gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops coupled with the disarmament of Hezbollah by Lebanese state forces.

However, implementation of the US-brokered agreement has stalled. Hezbollah has consistently refused to surrender its weapons, while Israeli officials maintain that forces will not vacate the territory until the group’s infrastructure is entirely dismantled.

Regional Ramifications and Enforcement Challenges

International monitors note that Iran warned the United States last month that it would respond forcefully if Israeli ground operations and airstrikes on the strategic highland persisted.

As the Israeli military completes its clearing operations and evaluates its defensive posture in the southern security zone, the long-term stability of the border remains fragile. The permanent alteration of the landscape at Ali al-Taher marks a significant tactical shift in the war, yet the broader political questions surrounding disarmament, territorial withdrawal, and regional governance remain entirely unresolved.
