ICE Raids Target Workers at Hyundai Supplier, Sparking Diplomatic Concerns
Images released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) depict dozens of individuals being detained wiht restraints on their wrists, ankles, and midsections while boarding buses. The operation, which involved armored vehicles and a helicopter, targeted employees at a supplier for Hyundai in Georgia.
The raids are part of ICE’s enforcement of the aggressive deportation policies enacted under President Donald Trump. In recent months, hundreds of migrants have been deported, with reports indicating some individuals have been sent to countries they are not citizens of.
CNN reported that workers, alerted to the impending raid, attempted to evade authorities. Some fled into a sewer pond, while others sought refuge in ventilation shafts.
A special agent with Homeland Security in Georgia stated, “This is a clear message to everyone who exploits our system.” The agent emphasized that legal employment is acceptable, stating, “We welcome everyone who wants to invest in the US. And if they take employees that is fine, as long as that happens legally.” President Trump referred to those detained as “illegal foreigners.”
the action has prompted a strong response from South Korea. president Lee Jae-Myung has established a special crisis team to address the situation, aiming for a “large-scale” response. Foreign Minister Cho Hyun is considering a trip to Washington D.C. to attempt to de-escalate diplomatic tensions.
“I am deeply worried,” Minister Cho said during an emergency meeting, adding, “I feel a heavy responsibility because of the arrest of our countrymen.”
Hyundai has released a brief statement announcing an internal examination to determine if its suppliers and subcontractors adhered to U.S. labor regulations.
These ICE arrests are consistent with President Trump’s commitment to reducing immigration, a central promise of his re-election campaign.
