The sharp Kona N SUV will receive a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that will be combined with an eight-speed N DCT transmission.
The range of Hyundai’s N-Division models should soon expand to include the Kona N sports SUV, which promises to combine uncompromising performance with SUV comfort and practicality. The basis of the sharp ride should be a combination of a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 280 horsepower, which will be combined with a special eight-speed N DCT transmission.
According to the carmaker, the 2.0 T-GDI power unit is characterized by balanced characteristics and an emphasis on high torque and power at medium and higher speeds. The new engine performance characteristics should also improve acceleration at medium and high speeds. Performance should be consistent over a wide range of outdoor temperatures.
However, in the latest press release on the Kona N, the carmaker focuses primarily on the dual-clutch eight-speed N DCT transmission, which was developed specifically for use in high-performance models from the N-workshops. It was first used on the Veloster N, sold in the US and Korea. however, it also appeared in the offer of the i30 N model and in the case of the Kona N it will be the only choice.
The N DCT transmission is an improved version of the eight-speed 8DCT dual-clutch transmission, which is based on Hyundai’s own development. However, the gearbox with two fluid clutches has been improved for the N models – especially in terms of durability. However, it also offers several special functions and its settings underline the sporty character of the N models.
The main novelty of the N DCT gearbox should be a new system of oil pumps, providing lubrication of gears and cooling of clutches, which ensures the functions of the DCT gearbox with minimal losses of engine power and also contributes to higher economy. In addition, the modernized pump system allows the gearbox to be connected to motors that offer high torque.
As a result, the new transmission should offer better sporty performance, as it allows you to use higher maximum torque values, as well as higher driving pleasure, as it guarantees more efficient transmission of driving power and faster acceleration. Improved transmission cooling then allows for long-term stress, for example when driving on a circuit, as well as the extraordinary stability that drivers will appreciate when driving in columns or steep ascents or descents, where the transmission is also exposed to high loads.
Fun for sports driving
After the experience with the i30 N model, we will all be curious about the dynamic capabilities of the Kona N model, which the N DCT transmission should underline with three functions: N Power Shift (NPS), N Grin Shift (NGS) and N Track Sense Shift (NTS). .
The N Power Shift function is automatically activated when the car accelerates with the throttle open to more than 90%. In this mode, the transmission suppresses the decrease in torque when shifting to a higher gear, thus enhancing the transmission of driving force. The experience is underlined by the splashing in the exhaust, which is caused by the short-term enrichment of the mixture during shifting.
The N Grin Shift function is activated by a button on the steering wheel and maximizes engine and DCT performance for maximum acceleration for 20 seconds. This feature allows the driver to immediately use the maximum potential of the car, but after activating it must wait 40 seconds before it is possible to use the feature again.
The N Track Shift function is then optimized for driving on the circuit, so it optimizes adaptive shifting so that the rider can concentrate more on driving. The NTS function independently recognizes the optimal conditions for dynamic driving and activates itself. The transmission then tries to choose the best possible gear at the right moment, based on data derived from motorsport and evaluation of driver commands.
These specific functions of the N DCT transmission complement five different driving modes of the N Grin Control system, which are Normal, Eco, Sport, N and Custom.
Tested by the Nürburgring
During development, the N DCT transmission was to complete at least 1,350 laps on the legendary North Loop – and only in endurance tests. Each new model from the Hyundai N division’s workshops must then complete at least 480 wheels (approx. 10,000 km) on the famous circuit on both dry and wet roads, thus simulating the carmaker for up to 180,000 km of intensive traffic in 5 to 6 weeks. The constant alternation of acceleration, braking and centrifugal forces in corners will thoroughly check the settings and durability of the car.
