KRUGER NATIONAL PARK, SOUTH AFRICA – A tourist on safari in Kruger National Park endured a terrifying attack by a pack of hyenas on September 3, 2024, suffering extensive injuries. Nicolas, whose last name has not been released, was rushed to a hospital and required approximately 70 stitches after the brutal encounter.
The attack underscores the inherent risks of wildlife encounters, even within protected areas like Kruger, and highlights the potential for severe injury when venturing into the territory of apex predators. This incident raises questions about safari safety protocols and the increasing proximity between humans and wildlife in South Africa. Nicolas is currently receiving medical care, and authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.
According to a witness,”He could not even recognise Nicolas,” following the assault. The victim sustained multiple injuries to his head, face, leg, and ankle. He was promptly transported to a medical facility for treatment.
Doctors addressed the facial and head wounds wiht sutures, but deliberately left deeper leg injuries open to mitigate the risk of infection. Medical personnel administered around 70 stitches in total to close the wounds.
The harrowing experience left Nicolas deeply shaken. He reportedly told rescuers, “My head was inside his mouth.”
