Huawei Launches Second-Generation Foldable Phone, the Mate XTS, Priced at $2,500
DUBAI, UAE – Huawei has released the second generation of it’s three-fold phone, the Mate XTS, priced at approximately $2,500, signaling a renewed push for innovation despite ongoing US sanctions. The launch comes as the company seeks to regain market share lost after restrictions hampered its access to key software and chips in 2020.According to data from IDC, Huawei sold 470,000 units of the original Mate XT, generating revenues exceeding $1.3 billion. Francisco Gironimo, Vice-head of IDC, told CNBC, “The performance is very strong, given that it is among the most expensive smartphones in the market, and this proves the existence of a demand for innovation.” The Mate XTS represents Huawei’s latest attempt to demonstrate its continued technological capabilities, notably in a competitive foldable phone market.
The Mate XTS will operate on Harmony OS 5.1,the latest version of Huawei’s proprietary operating system. Marketed as a productivity-focused device, it features desktop-level applications optimized for its triple-fold screen, allowing users to manage windows and screen size similar to a personal computer.
Huawei is offering incentives to attract consumers, including a discount of over 50% on screen replacements and two complimentary at-home or user-selected location maintenance services. The phone will be available in four colors and boasts a 5600 mAh battery, a relatively large capacity compared to current market offerings.
Despite these advancements, Huawei’s market share remains limited outside of China due to ongoing obstacles. The company has been developing its own operating system and manufacturing chips within China to mitigate the impact of US sanctions, allowing for a gradual return to the market.
