Huawei Unveils Mate xts: A New Standard in Foldable Phone technology
Shenzhen, China – September 4, 2025 – Huawei has launched the Mate Xts, it’s second generation three-foldable smartphone, showcasing meaningful advancements in design and technology. The declaration was made during a live launch event in Shenzhen, the company’s headquarters and a key technological hub in china, with details reported by Bloomberg.
Richard Yu, head of Huawei’s consumer division, highlighted the Mate Xts as “not just a foldable phone… a exhibition of engineering force.”
The Mate Xts boasts two folding mechanisms, transforming from a smartphone into a nearly 26-centimeter (diagonal) tablet. This represents an improvement over the previous model, and comes with a reduced price tag of approximately $2,500, down from $2,800 in 2024.
A key component of the Mate Xts is the Kirin 9020 processor, a locally produced chip that underscores Huawei’s efforts to lessen its reliance on Western technologies. The company states it has achieved “mass production” of the device, now available in four color variants - black, white, green, and gold – an increase from the two offered in the first generation.Huawei is also further distancing itself from Google’s Android operating system with the Mate Xts, which runs on HarmonyOS, developed internally. Collaboration with Chinese developers, including tech giant Tencent and its WeChat app, has enabled advanced multitasking features, a desktop experience, and mobile PC application compatibility within HarmonyOS.
The launch comes at a time of significant growth in the foldable phone market, which has seen a 45% increase worldwide, according to data from Counterpoint research. China currently leads global deliveries, with Huawei’s presence steadily growing.
Analysts predict Apple will enter the foldable phone market next year with its first foldable iPhone. Huawei’s Mate Xts aims to solidify its position in China and set a new benchmark for smartphone design.Durability remains a key concern for three-foldable devices. Expert Jerry Hildebrand previously warned that “adding a second folding point increases the risk of mechanical fragility.” The first Mate XT faced criticism for the mechanical vulnerability of its screen. Huawei claims to have addressed these concerns with “significant steps in the body architecture” for the Mate Xts, resulting in improved durability compared to the previous generation.
