Wiesbaden „Expo Chicago“, the leading art fair in the Midwest of the United States of America, takes place as planned from April 8th to 11th: But only as an online version. The event with an audience has to be postponed again. Instead of April, it will not take place until summer 2021.
An exact date is not given in a press release from this week. The organizer keeps the time window wide open from July to September in order to be able to adapt to the development of the corona pandemic.
For the ninth physical edition of the event, it’s already the second postponement. With the cancellation of the 2020 trade fair, the organizer changed the date from the end of September to April, possibly not with the Armory Show to collide in New York, which in turn changes from early March to September.
The background: Both trade fairs compete for the same US exhibitors and collectors. The venue for the Expo Chicago is the Navy Pier, which is historic by American standards and was built around a hundred years ago.

Since its inception, the Expo has endeavored to inherit “Art Chicago”, which was discontinued in 2011 and was considered the most important art fair by many market participants in the 1980s, even before the „Art Basel“. Since its first edition in 2012, the Expo has won many domestic blue chip galleries, but has lost some of its international appeal.
For the first time, the Expo is announcing a purely digital symposium for January 21-23. The topic is the ecological impact of the trade in contemporary art in times of the global pandemic. Panel discussions, films and a curated forum in which artists and partner institutions are involved are freely accessible to the public.
Expo Chicago online: April 8-11, 2021. Live at Navy Piers in summer 2021
