Tanzania: UN calls for Inquiry After Police Crackdown on Post-Election Protests

Dar es Salaam,Tanzania⁣ – November 10,2023 – the United Nations‍ High Commissioner for Human Rights,Volker Türk,is demanding an investigation into the killings adn other⁤ alleged⁣ abuses ‍committed during and⁢ after Tanzania’s recent elections. The call ⁣follows reports of a violent crackdown ⁣by Tanzanian police on protests, raising concerns about human rights violations and the democratic process.

The unrest stems from allegations of irregularities in the October 29th local⁢ government elections, with opposition parties claiming ⁣widespread fraud.⁢ Security forces responded to demonstrations with lethal force in several regions, including Zanzibar,⁣ resulting in confirmed deaths and numerous ⁤arrests. The UN’s intervention underscores growing international pressure‌ on the ⁢Tanzanian government to ensure accountability and protect civil liberties.

Türk specifically called for the “unconditional release of all those⁤ arrested before the vote took place and others who have⁢ as been detained,” according to a statement released today. The exact number of⁣ casualties remains disputed, but reports⁢ indicate at least several protesters ⁣have been killed, and dozens‌ more⁤ injured.

The Tanzanian government⁣ and police have yet to respond⁤ to requests for comment regarding the allegations‍ of excessive force and the UN’s call for an investigation. Opposition leaders have condemned the police response as disproportionate and a suppression⁣ of democratic expression. ⁤the situation remains tense as concerns ‌mount over potential further unrest and the‍ erosion of ⁢democratic norms in‌ Tanzania.
