Emotional farewell in Portugal draws football world together
The football world paused as the **Liverpool** squad, along with numerous figures from across the sport, gathered in Portugal to pay their respects to forward **Diogo Jota**, who recently passed away. The somber service was held in his hometown of Gondomar.
Reds Squad United in Grief
**Liverpool** players, management, and staff attended the funeral service held for **Jota** and his brother **Andre Silva**. The profound loss was felt deeply within the club, with captain **Virgil van Dijk** and **Andy Robertson** carrying floral tributes shaped like red jerseys bearing the brothers’ respective numbers.
**Arne Slot**, the head coach, was present alongside key figures such as **Michael Edwards**, who initially brought **Jota** to **Liverpool**, and current sporting director **Richard Hughes**. Head of physiotherapy **Lee Nobes**, who worked closely with **Jota** during his injuries, also attended.
Unable to attend due to international duty with Brazil, goalkeeper **Alisson Becker** shared a touching message on Instagram, stating, “Usually, I post things that make sense but, today, nothing makes sense.”
He added, “Once again, an ocean separates me from ‘saying goodbye’ to someone I love. But I know that I am well represented by my club mates…To you, my friend **Rute**, just know that you will never walk alone, we will be with you as soon as possible.”
Football Stars Gather to Pay Respects
Several of **Jota’s** former teammates were present to honor his memory, including ex-**Liverpool** captain **Jordan Henderson**, who had previously laid flowers at Anfield. Other notable attendees included **James Milner**, **Thiago Alcantara**, **Caoimhin Kelleher**, **Fabinho**, and former **Wolves** teammate **Joao Moutinho**.
**Manchester City’s** Portuguese duo, **Bernardo Silva** and **Ruben Dias**, along with **Manchester United** captain **Bruno Fernandes**, also attended the service. **Ruben Neves**, a close friend of **Jota**, served as a pallbearer after flying in from the Club World Cup.
**Nuno Espirito Santo**, **Jota’s** former boss at **Wolves**, was also present. Since 1990, over 400 professional soccer players have passed away around the globe; the average age of the player at the time of death was 26 (FIFPro).
Tributes and Lasting Memories
**Bernardo Silva** spoke to TVI, saying, “I can’t even imagine the pain of the family, of **Rute**, of the children, of the parents.”
He reflected on **Jota’s** character, stating, “More important than that, as a person, the memories that remain. **Jota** will remain in our hearts forever.”

According to reports, **Liverpool** intends to fulfill the remainder of **Jota’s** contract, providing the funds to his family.
