Festive Season Freedom: How I maintain My weight and Wellbeing at Christmas in My 70s
For manny, teh holiday season conjures images of indulgent feasts and cozy treats – a welcome respite, but frequently enough followed by regret. But enjoying Christmas without the worry of weight gain, or a dip in mood, is possible, even as we age. I’ve discovered a combination of strategies that allow me to fully participate in the festivities while safeguarding my health and happiness, and it’s been a game-changer.
Maintaining a stable weight and positive outlook during the holidays becomes increasingly important as we enter our 70s and beyond. Age-related metabolic changes can make weight management more challenging, while the pressures and potential loneliness of the season can impact emotional wellbeing. The good news is that proactive steps – focusing on mindful eating, consistent movement, and prioritizing mental health - can make all the difference, allowing for enjoyment without compromise.
For years,I struggled with the cycle of holiday overindulgence and subsequent weight gain. I realized I needed a different approach, one that didn’t involve deprivation but rather a mindful recalibration of my habits. A key element has been incorporating regular walks into my daily routine, even on busy festive days. A brisk walk not only helps burn calories but also elevates my mood and provides a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle.
I also focus on protein and fiber-rich foods at meals, which help me feel fuller for longer and reduce cravings for sugary treats. I still enjoy my favourite festive foods, but I practice portion control and balance them with healthier options. This isn’t about denying myself pleasure; it’s about making conscious choices that support my wellbeing.
Crucially, I’ve learned to prioritize my mental health during this frequently enough-emotional time.Maintaining social connections, engaging in activities I enjoy, and practicing gratitude are all vital components of my strategy. By actively nurturing my emotional wellbeing, I’m better equipped to navigate the challenges of the season and maintain a positive outlook.
This combination of mindful eating, consistent movement, and emotional self-care has allowed me to enjoy the festivities without the usual post-holiday anxieties. It’s a sustainable approach that has made a critically important difference in my life, and I hope it can do the same for you.
