Houthis Weigh In: Will Yemen Join War Amid Iran-Israel Conflict?

March 22, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Sanaa, Yemen – Yemen’s Houthi movement, officially known as Ansar Allah, signaled on Saturday, March 21, 2026, that We see considering direct involvement in the escalating conflict between the United States and Israel, and Iran. The group, which controls significant territory in Yemen, stated that all options are “on the table” should the situation deteriorate further, raising the specter of a fresh front in the already volatile region.

The Houthis have a history of regional antagonism, having previously launched attacks against Israel and commercial shipping in the Red Sea. These actions, intended to demonstrate solidarity with Palestinians, have already disrupted maritime trade routes. The potential for expanded Houthi involvement comes as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is already significantly hampered, causing substantial economic losses globally.

Founded in 1994 by Hussein al-Houthi, the movement emerged as a Zaydi revivalist group advocating for greater rights and autonomy for the Zaidi Shia Muslim minority in Yemen. Following Hussein al-Houthi’s death in 2004, his brother, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, assumed leadership, and the group evolved into a powerful political and military force. According to Wikipedia, current estimates place Houthi membership at approximately 350,000 fighters .

The Houthis’ alignment with Iran is a key factor in the current situation. While the extent of Iranian support remains a subject of debate, the Houthis are widely considered to be a proxy of Tehran in the region. The group’s ideology, a complex blend of Shia Islamism, Khomeinism, and pan-Arabism, resonates with Iran’s own regional ambitions. They are part of the informal “Axis of Resistance” opposing Israel and Western influence in the Middle East.

Analysts suggest that Houthi intervention could take several forms, ranging from increased attacks on shipping lanes to direct military support for Iran. “The Houthis have demonstrated a willingness to project power beyond Yemen’s borders,” noted Farea al-Muslimi, a research fellow at Chatham House, in a recent analysis. “Their capabilities, while limited, could significantly exacerbate the existing tensions.”

The potential opening of a new front in Yemen also complicates the ongoing Saudi-led intervention in the country’s civil war. Saudi Arabia, a key US ally, has been engaged in a military campaign against the Houthis since 2015, seeking to restore the internationally recognized Yemeni government. While a ceasefire has been in place for periods, the conflict remains unresolved. The Houthis have allies including Hezbollah , and Hamas, further complicating the regional dynamics.

The disruption to global trade is a major concern. Rockford Weitz, director of the Fletcher Maritime Studies Programme at Tufts University, emphasized the strategic importance of the Red Sea and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. “These waterways are critical chokepoints for global commerce,” he stated. “Any significant disruption could have cascading effects on supply chains and energy markets.”

Despite the heightened rhetoric, the Houthis have not yet taken concrete action to directly join the conflict. Although, their statement signals a clear willingness to escalate the situation if they perceive a threat to their interests or those of their allies. The group’s spokesman, Mohammed Abdul Salam, has not issued further statements clarifying the specific conditions that would trigger intervention. The Presidential Leadership Council of Yemen has yet to respond to the Houthis’ statement.
