Hospital Closures 2026: Regency & Bradford to Shut Down | Becker’s Hospital Review

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Regency Hospital-Meridian in Mississippi is ceasing operations on or before March 13, according to hospital officials. The closure, announced Wednesday, impacts the 40-bed critical illness recovery facility located within Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center South.

Shelly Eckenroth, chief communication officer for Select Medical, which operates Regency Hospitals, characterized the decision as an operational business matter. Select Medical operates more than 100 such facilities across the United States, according to the company’s website.

Patients requiring continued recovery care will have access to services at Ochsner Specialty Hospital in Meridian, Eckenroth stated. The closure of Regency Hospital-Meridian is one of two hospital shutdowns announced this week, signaling broader financial pressures within the healthcare industry. Bradford Regional Medical Center in Pennsylvania announced plans to close inpatient, emergency and long-term care services by mid-2026, transitioning to an outpatient care model.

Kaleida Health, the parent organization of Bradford Regional Medical Center, cited federal funding cuts and longstanding financial challenges as contributing factors to its decision. Don Boyd, president and CEO of Kaleida Health, stated the closure is part of a $200 million plan to “evaluate and reimagine” care delivery in the region.

The closures follow a trend of hospital shutdowns, with Becker’s Hospital Review reporting 23 hospital and emergency department closures in 2025 and 25 in 2024.
