Hopes high for major economic boost in Westmeath as IDA bosses are given further time to construct state of the art advanced building in Athlone

Athlone Tech Park Expansion Approved: Five-Year Extension Granted

The IDA has secured a five-year extension to finish its advanced technology building in Athlone, aiming to attract more multinational investments to the Irish midlands. This decision signifies a strategic move to bolster Athlone’s position as a prime location for technological innovation and economic growth.

Project Timeline Extended

Officials from the state agency responsible for attracting foreign direct investment in Ireland submitted a plan in April. This plan sought to extend the development timeline at the IDA Business & Technology Park in Garrycastle, Athlone, for five years.

“Significant work has already taken place, including demolishing an existing building and removing asbestos.”

Facility Details

The initial approval for demolition and construction of the new technology facility on a 4.5-acre site was granted in January 2020. The consultants noted in their planning report that the original five-year timeframe expired on April 16.

The consultants further explained that significant works, such as razing a 4,200-square-meter building and removing asbestos from the site, have already been completed. The report anticipates the remaining permitted works will be finished by 2029.

IDA bosses have been approved a five year extension to complete its plans to add a new, purpose built advanced technology building to its Business & Technology Park at Garrycastle, Athlone.

Athlone’s status as the “capital of industry in the Midlands” is supported by the presence of multinational firms like Ericsson, GlobalLogic, and Medtronic, major employers already based in the town. The Westmeath County Council’s approval considered the lack of environmental concerns needing further assessment.
