Hong Kong is preparing to host the 50th anniversary of the Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament at the newly opened Kai Tak Sports Park from April 17-19, 2026, with over 100,000 fans expected to attend.
The event, which will be the first round of the Sevens World Championships – a new three-division global Sevens model – will feature over 70 matches with the world’s top international men’s and women’s teams competing for the title. Last year saw Argentina win the men’s crown and New Zealand take the women’s title.
The move to the Kai Tak Sports Park, which opened in March 2025, offers fans a new environment, with a 50,000-seat stadium equipped with a soundproof retractable roof and an in-stadium cooling system. A Fan Village will provide areas for eating, drinking and relaxation, with matches shown on a big screen and live entertainment.
The famed ‘South Stand’ – an adult-only area – will be recreated at Kai Tak Stadium and will be open to all General Admission ticketholders aged 18 and over on a first-come, first-served basis. The stadium will feature 28 food concession outlets and four bars, offering a diverse selection of cuisines in sustainable packaging.
Beyond the stadium, the 28-hectare entertainment precinct at Kai Tak Sports Park offers over 230 retail outlets and 70 restaurants within walking distance. The Kai Tak Mall also includes a wellness centre, an indoor adventure playground, a 17.5-metre covered climbing wall, and 40 bowling lanes.
The Hong Kong Tourism Board is promoting the Sevens as more than just a sporting event, highlighting the city’s broader appeal as a destination for urban adventure. Visitors are encouraged to explore attractions such as the Man Mo Temple, the M+ museum, and Victoria Harbour, as well as the city’s vibrant food scene.
A new gourmet guide, Taste Hong Kong, has been launched, spotlighting 250 chef-recommended restaurants curated by over 50 local chefs. Hong Kong is known as the “Culinary Capital of Asia” and offers a range of dining options, from Michelin-starred restaurants to street food staples like dim sum and egg tarts.
Organizers are also emphasizing Hong Kong’s accessibility as a transit hub, with its efficient metro network allowing easy access to various attractions. The Vengaboys are scheduled to perform during the event, adding to the festive atmosphere.
