Hirundine Whisky: Rugby Stars Unveil 38-Year-Old Masterpiece | City A.M.

February 19, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Scottish rugby stars Pierre Schoeman and Duhan van der Merwe are expanding their premium spirits brand, Against the Grain (ATG) Spirits, with the release of a limited-edition 38-Year-Old Speyside Single Malt whisky, according to a company statement. The unveiling follows the success of their earlier releases, including a 12-Year-Old Single Malt and a 15-Year-Old ‘Legacy’ edition.

The 38-Year-Old, limited to just 15 individually numbered bottles, is described as having undergone double maturation in ex-bourbon and sherry casks, followed by a finish in a First Fill PX Octave. It is presented in a heavy crystal decanter with a brass stopper, engraved with details reflecting the brand’s identity.

Against the Grain Spirits was founded two years ago by Schoeman and van der Merwe, both prominent players for Scotland’s national rugby team and the British &amp. Irish Lions. Van der Merwe, born in South Africa, is Scotland’s record try-scorer and a key figure from the 2025 British & Irish Lions tour. Schoeman, as well originally from South Africa, has become a fan favorite known for his distinctive mullet and strong performance as a scrummager.

The brand’s philosophy centers on “doing things the right way, not the easy way,” and emphasizes purpose and craftsmanship. Supporting the founders are Nika van der Merwe and Charissa Schoeman, who oversee the company’s strategic and creative direction.

ATG Spirits demonstrates a commitment to social responsibility through its support of the Wooden Spoon Charity, with a portion of proceeds from each bottle sale contributing to the organization’s perform with children.

Following the sell-out success of their initial releases, Hirundine 01 and 02, the brand plans to launch its core 18-year-old and 21-year-old Speyside Single Malts later in 2026. These will be available in premium venues including The Kitchin, Tattu, and Edinburgh Castle.
