Hezbollah Drones Target Israel Amid Escalating Military Tensions

May 12, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Hezbollah has launched explosive drones into Israel following the deaths of two Lebanese medics.

The attacks coincide with a shift in the group’s tactical approach, characterized by the deployment of low-cost, first-person-view (FPV) drones designed to bypass sophisticated electronic defenses. These drones, which cost approximately $300, utilize fiber-optic cables to maintain a connection with their operators. Because these cables are immune to the electronic jamming typically used by state militaries to neutralize radio-controlled aircraft, the drones can penetrate high-tech defense perimeters.

Footage released by Hezbollah military media shows these drones targeting Israeli military assets in south Lebanon. In Bint Jbeil, the drones were used to attack Israeli bulldozers, while in Taybeh, they targeted tanks and personnel. In one documented engagement, an FPV drone exploded next to a group of Israeli soldiers clustered by a tank, killing one soldier and injuring six others.

The group’s drone operations have specifically targeted the Merkava tank, with reports indicating that the FPV craft have successfully evaded the Trophy active protection system. These drones allow operators to pilot the explosive-equipped craft directly via a video feed, enabling precision strikes on impact.

These drone strikes are part of a broader escalation of hostilities along the border. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that Hezbollah fired several rockets at troops positioned in southern Lebanon. In a separate engagement, Hezbollah attempted to shoot down an Israeli Air Force fighter jet using a surface-to-air missile.

To address the proliferation of these low-cost aerial threats, Israel is planning the establishment of a drone factory. This facility is intended to develop specific countermeasures and technologies to counter Hezbollah’s FPV attack capabilities.
