From 1 June, babies will also be tested for the serious and rare muscle disease SMA via the heel prick. The disease can cause paralysis and even death if left untreated. Fokke and Rita know how important an early diagnosis can be: son Ruben was diagnosed with the disease at the age of three, and his brother Gideon was diagnosed with the disease at birth. The difference is huge.
