Hamilton and Piastri Face Super License penalty Points After São Paulo Grand Prix Incidents

The São Paulo Grand Prix saw both Lewis Hamilton and Oscar Piastri receive penalty points on their super licences following separate on-track incidents. These penalties bring both drivers closer to potential race bans, as per FIA regulations.
Hamilton’s Race Cut Short by Collisions
seven-time world Champion Lewis Hamilton experienced a challenging race, initially sustaining damage after contact with Carlos Sainz on the opening lap. Later in the race, Hamilton collided with the Alpine of Franco Colapinto at high speed, resulting in significant front wing damage and ultimately leading to his retirement. Stewards assessed the incident and issued a five-second time penalty,which was served during the race,alongside a penalty point on Hamilton’s super licence. This marks his third penalty point within the last 12 months, according to FIA guidelines.
Piastri’s Incident at Safety Car Restart
Oscar piastri faced scrutiny for a collision with Kimi Antonelli during a safety car restart. The incident subsequently involved Charles Leclerc, who was forced to retire from the race. Piastri was deemed responsible for the collision by race stewards and received a 10-second time penalty served during a pit stop. More substantially, he was handed two penalty points on his super licence, bringing his total to six within the past 12 months.
Tsunoda Also Receives Penalties
Yuki Tsunoda also incurred penalties during the São Paulo Grand Prix. He received two penalty points on his super licence after contact with Lance Stroll, raising his total to seven.
FIA Sporting Regulations state that a driver accumulating 12 penalty points within a 12-month period will face an automatic race ban.
The increasing accumulation of penalty points highlights the stringent enforcement of safety regulations within Formula 1. Drivers are under constant pressure to maintain a clean racing record to avoid potential suspensions.
