Today, Thursday (February 9, 2023), the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, expressed her support for providing Ukraine with combat aircraft and long-range missiles. “Countries should quickly consider, as a next step, providing the long-range systems and aircraft they need to protect the freedom that many have taken for granted,” Mitsola said, in a joint session with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, drawing applause from European MPs.
“Our response must be proportional to the threat, and the threat is existential,” Mitsola said. Mitsola also emphasized the support of the European Union to Ukraine. “We were with you before, we are with you now, and we will be with you as long as there is a need,” Mitsola said.
For his part, the Ukrainian President thanked the European Union and its citizens for the assistance that his country receives, and Zelensky said in his speech to the representatives of the European Parliament, “Thank you,” while the deputies received him with a lot of warm applause and cheers, and some of them wore blue and yellow clothes to indicate the flag.

Addressing members of the European Parliament, the Ukrainian President stressed that his country’s forces fighting the Russian army are “defending you,” in a speech in which he called for more European military support for his country. “We are defending against the strongest anti-European force in the modern world – we are defending ourselves, we Ukrainians on the battlefield, on your side,” he told European deputies.
