David Justice Reveals Expectations in Halle Berry Marriage
Former Athlete Cites “Traditional” Views, Lack of Therapy
Retired baseball star **David Justice** has opened up about his marriage to Academy Award winner **Halle Berry**, attributing their 1993-1997 union’s dissolution partly to his traditional expectations and a lack of understanding regarding relationship therapy.
Differing Perspectives on Domestic Roles
Speaking on the “All the Smoke” podcast, **Justice** shared that his upbringing influenced his views on a wife’s role. “My knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn’t vast,” he explained. “So, I’m looking at my mom — and I’m a Midwest guy. So, in my mind, I’m thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean, [be] traditional, you know?”
The athlete admitted his limited prior relationship experience contributed to his mindset. He recalled questioning if **Berry** would be the right partner for raising a family, noting, “she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like, motherly, and then we start having issues.”
Impact of Career Demands and Therapy
**Justice** also pointed to **Berry’s** demanding acting career, which required extensive travel, as a factor. “We spent a lot of time apart because she was doing movies in this country, that country,” he stated. He reflected that the marriage “probably could have made it if I knew about therapy.”
In the United States, nearly 40% of couples seeking therapy report improved communication and relationship satisfaction, highlighting the potential benefits of professional support in navigating marital challenges (American Psychological Association, 2024).
Career Milestones During Marriage
During their four-year marriage, **Berry** experienced significant career advancements. Her roles in “Queen,” “The Flintstones,” and “Losing Isaiah” were all released during this period. Her career continued to flourish in the years that followed, including her iconic portrayal of Storm in the “X-Men” franchise and her Oscar-winning performance in “Monster’s Ball.”
Personal Lives Post-Marriage
**Justice** later married **Rebecca Villalobos** in 2001, with whom he has three children. **Halle Berry** has since had two children, daughter **Nahla** with ex-partner **Gabriel Aubrey** and son **Maceo-Robert** with ex-husband **Olivier Martinez**.
