Haidian Badminton Tournament: 900+ Players Fuel Fitness Surge
A new badminton center is under construction in Beijing’s Haidian District, officials announced this month, as the city continues to invest in public sports facilities. The project, intended to enhance national fitness initiatives, will feature a three-on-three competition in addition to traditional mixed team and individual events.
The Haidian District Sports Bureau stated the center aims to “provide citizens with a better fitness environment and fitness experience and help upgrade the service environment of Haidian District gymnasiums,” according to a report from iNEWS.
Haidian District, located in northwest Beijing, is the second-largest urban district in the city, encompassing 431 square kilometers and a population of over 3.13 million as of November 2020, according to Wikipedia. The district is also home to the China National Space Administration and the Beijing Aerospace Flight Control Center.
The construction of the badminton center is presented as part of a broader trend of sports development in China, moving from a focus on elite athletic training to widespread public participation, iNEWS reported. This aligns with a national emphasis on “national fitness” as a key component of public health and well-being.
Recent sports initiatives in Beijing include registration opening for the 2026 BOB Beijing MC Marathon and the 2026 Beijing Daxing Half Marathon, as well as preparations for the 2025-2026 FIS Snowboard & Freeski Big Air World Cup at Shougang in Shijingshan District, according to english.beijing.gov.cn. The city was recently recognized as a leading international sports event city.
The Nansha River waterfront in Haidian District also recently underwent landscape improvements, opening a new scenic area for public use, according to the Haidian District Water Authority.
The 2025 Badminton Asia Elite Tour is scheduled to kick off on November 30 at Tongzhou Stadium, english.beijing.gov.cn reported.
