Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein‘ and ‘Jay Kelly’ Set for São Paulo Mostra International Film Festival
SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – Guillermo del Toro’s highly anticipated “Frankenstein” and the Brazilian fiction film “Jay Kelly” are confirmed selections for the 2025 São Paulo Mostra International Film Festival, marking the festival’s third year of official partnership with Netflix. The streaming giant will award a prize to one Brazilian fiction film from the festival that hasn’t yet landed a streaming deal, later making the winning film available in over 190 countries.
The Mostra, which first hosted Netflix with Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma” in 2018, has become a key platform for boosting the global reach of Brazilian storytelling. In 2023, Netflix awarded it’s prize to Haroldo Borges’ “Bittersweet Rain” (“Saudade Fez Morada Aqui Dentro”), and in 2024, honored Lírio Ferreira’s “Serra das Almas.” Borges noted the impact of the Netflix deal, stating, “‘Saudade Fez Morada aqui Dentro’ on Netflix makes that word of mouth possible.”
This year, Netflix will also showcase three original productions at the festival: “Piano Lesson” (U.S.), “Pedro Páramo” (México), and the Brazilian limited series “Children of the Church Steps.” The selection of “Jay Kelly” as a Brazilian fiction film in competition positions it as a potential recipient of the Netflix award, offering significant international exposure.
