Grand Ole Opry to Celebrate 50 Years of the CCMA and Riley Green to Headline Grey Cup Halftime Show
Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry has scheduled a special broadcast for Oct. 29 titled “Grand Ole Opry: Celebrating 50 Years of the CCMA,” honoring the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Country Music Association, with an iHeartRadio | Pure Country Radio airdate set across Canada for Nov. 6.
Milestone Broadcast Bridges Nashville and Canadian Country Icons
The upcoming October event will gather Canadian country artists from multiple generations to highlight both foundational figures and rising stars shaping the genre. Confirmed performers for the lineup include Opry member Terri Clark, Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Gord Bamford, Paul Brandt, Tami Neilson, Tenille Arts, and Brett Kissel, who received the Gary Slaight Humanitarian Award at the CCMA Awards. Radio personalities Jackie Rae Greening and four-time CCMA Award winner Shannon Ella will serve as special guest announcers for the broadcast.
The celebration arrives on the heels of several major crossover moments between the two institutions. During the CCMA events on Sept. 19, singer Jess Moskaluke was surprised on stage with an invitation to make her Opry debut during the anniversary showcase. Similarly, Kalsey Kulyk received a video invitation from American hitmaker Lainey Wilson to make her own Opry debut in November following a performance at the CCMAs Legends Showcase. The anniversary broadcast will also feature Stella Lefty performing “Boston,” a track that held steady at No. 2 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 for multiple weeks.
International Expansion and a Banner Year for Canadian Country
The milestone 50th anniversary coincides with broader international outreach by the Canadian Country Music Association. In August, the non-profit organization launched the inaugural Canada-Australia Country Music Exchange, a pilot program designed to introduce Canadian and Australian country musicians into each other’s domestic markets.
The top three slots of the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 featured a clean sweep of country tracks, anchored by Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas,” which secured a 20th week at No. 1. Concurrently, Canadian country-rock artist Cameron Whitcomb reached his highest-charting position with “Kingdom of Fear” at No. 3 on the Canadian charts, following his tenure as Billboard’s Country Up-And-Comer for July. Festivals such as Boots and Hearts and LASSO continue to draw tens of thousands of attendees across Ontario and Quebec.
CFL Grey Cup Halftime and Pre-Game Festivities
The current momentum for country music extends beyond radio and chart milestones into major sports broadcasting. The Canadian Football League (CFL) announced that American country star Riley Green will headline the Grey Cup Halftime Show at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium on Nov. 15. Green’s appearance follows the release of his album That’s Just Me on Sept. 18 and a string of chart-topping radio singles.
“I’m excited to finally get to experience a Grey Cup and be part of the energy surrounding it. Getting to perform at halftime in front of that crowd is going to be a hell of a time, and a pretty special way to wrap up what’s been a really wild year!” Green said regarding the upcoming performance. While the choice of an American headliner mirrors past debates regarding domestic representation during the league’s championship game, the pre-game lineup leans heavily into Canadian heritage. Halifax-born singer Sarah McLachlan will perform the national anthem, while Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor of Blue Rodeo will deliver a special guest performance, accompanied by a kickoff concert from the James Barker Band.
